Celebrating 30 Years
From

March 4th to 6th, Phi Theta Kappa’s Chapters from BMCC and La Guardia Community
College joined forces to host the Phi Theta Kappa’s NY Regional Conference 2016. Members,
alumnae, regional coordinators, officers, advisory board, as well as a few special guests, met to
celebrate its 30th anniversary. Now you might ask, what is a Regional Conference and what
exactly do we do there?

Well, the Regional as we call it, give members the chance to celebrate and acknowledge
academic excellence, student development, community service, and leadership. It is also an
opportunity for networking with neighboring chapter’s members and discuss Phi Theta Kappa’s
various initiatives. As member of BMCC’s Phi Theta Kappa-Alpha Kappa Chapter, I was
fortunate to attend the event, and which I am glad to summarize for you:

Day 1

The Opening Ceremony. At Ricard Herris Terrace hall at BMCC, members and guests were
treated to dinner having the opportunity to mingle and to network; Candaceia Charles from La
Guardia Community College performed a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, and
BMCC Provost and Sr. VP of Academic Affairs, Karrin E. Wilks gave the commencement
speech.

Following were: Amie Bernstein International President for Division 1, who gave an account of
her experience as a former Regional President; and later, Dr. Vincent Cheng, Assistant Professor,
Communications Program Coordinator at BMCC’s Speech, in the communication and Theatre
Arts department. Delivered a very thought provoking speech on working hard and staying
current with world events. Dr Cheng said, “You have to use your brain until it hurts,” which
scared the living daylights out of me, though I must admit he is right, basically exhorting us to
seek the rewards that only hard work can provide. You know the saying, “No pain no gain.”

Afterwards, we engaged in the Fellowship Event, where members chose to socialize by either
playing puzzle games or going for a ride on the Staten Island Ferry to enjoy the city’s landscape.
I chose the latter, which was awesome for those like me, who had never been to the ferry before.
A real treat!

Day 2

During breakfast, guest speaker Amie Bernstein, International President of Division 1, from
Suffolk County Community College, offered the opening remarks, followed by the outgoing
Regional Officers, who gave their reflections about their personal experiences.

Departing Officers: Ainsley Brundage, Mohawk Valley Community College (President);
Michael Campbell, Onondaga Community College (Northern Vice President); Niam Youssif
Traore, Westchester Community College (Southern Vice President); Richard Thomas, Monroe
Community College (Western Vice President); Amanda Smith, Monroe Community College
(Executive Secretary); and, Andrew Edwards, Mohawk Valley Community College (Alumni
Representative).

The day continued with Workshop Sessions that included:

Honors in Action (HIA)
Hosted by: Amanda Smith (NY Phi Theta Kappa Executive Secretary), Michael
Campbell (NY Phi Theta Kappa Northern Vice President).
Presenters talked about the 8 steps to a successful Honors Project. They discussed the
DOs and DON’Ts, using previous projects as examples, and gave a first look at the new
HIA topic for 2016.

What kind of Leader are you?
Hosted by: Richard Thomas (NY Phi Theta Kappa Western Vice President), and Andrew
Edwards (NY Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Representative).
Participants of this workshop were educated on diverse leadership approaches, styles, and
personality traits you might find functional to each individual.

Phi Theta Kappa: The Basics (Which I chose to attend)
Hosted by: Ainsley Brundage (NY Phi Theta Kappa President), and Niam Traore Youssif
(NY Phi Theta Kappa Southern Vice President).
This session was basically an informative dialog on Phi Theta Kappa fundamentals,
followed by a Q&A session to elucidate on all aspects pertaining the organization’s role,
as well as its members’ responsibilities and benefits of being a member/officer.

Afterwards, we all got back together for an exhibition of various posters created by the different
chapters in attendance, showcasing their values and goals. We had the opportunity to learn about
their inspiration and influences; and later, we voted to choose the best one. Below is photo
gallery of the posters. Can you guess which one took the grand prize?

Day 3

After breakfast, Regional Awards were given out, followed by the induction of the Newly
Elected Regional Officers, followed by closing remarks from Alex d’Erizans Senior Faculty
Advisor, the Convention came to end.
All in all, it was an awesome experience!
Now, here is a little treat for you: below is a little video diary to give you a sneak peak of the
conference. Click on the bottom bellow to watch!

Therefore, we must learn to market our accomplishments as well as our abilities to get the job that will allow us to reach our goals, not just as individuals, but also as a community. Giving back and sharing knowledge are a big part of what we do at Phi Theta Kappa, where we strongly believe in the proverb “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” Based on this principle, we want to assist all students at BMCC to maximize their potential and reach their goals by providing the means to make the transition into the professional arena, as successful as their academics.

The word of the day is Teamwork because our honors in action project is all about working together to create an award winning project.

We are well on our way into the Spring 2015 semester and already there is lots to do.

Last semester we voted on our Honors in Action question and this semester we get to try to answer it through our Honors in Action project.

For those of you who may not remember or who are new, our honors in action project is something we do each year. Here's a quick synopsis from ptk.org.

Phi Theta Kappa Honors in Action

The Honors Program fulfills multiple dimensions of Phi Theta Kappa's purpose. It is designed to:

foster a stimulating environment for intellectual growth and challenge.

create opportunities for leadership and learning as leaders through service and advocacy.

For the first purpose of our mission — fostering a stimulating intellectual environment — the Honors Program foundation and focus is the Honors Study Topic. The biennial topic is an interdisciplinary, contemporary topic of interest related to global challenges. Members explore the topic with the multitude of perspectives that their personal experiences and academic studies provide.

For the second purpose of our mission — creating opportunities for leadership and action — the Honors Program provides guidance through a process called Honors in Action for taking action based upon new knowledge related to the themes of the Honors Study Topic.

Honors in Action
Honors in Action is the process that provides opportunities to apply learning and practice to real-world problem-solving by developing an in-depth, action-oriented project related to Honors Study Topic research. Academic research into the themes related to the Honors Study Topic is what makes the difference between Honors in Action and simply action. Honors in Action is informed action designed to make a lasting impact and contribute to the betterment of society. Through engaging in Honors in Action, students develop and demonstrate:

awareness of the importance of seeking out multiple perspectives augment understanding and improve decision-making.

abilities to draw research conclusions and develop ideas to make a difference.

effective planning and capabilities to initiate action.

intentional and purposeful efforts to grow leadership skills.

understanding of the need to involve others and work together

capacities to lead and manage self and others to motivate, overcome obstacles, perform in complicated environments and accomplish goals.

aptitudes for assessing progress, adjusting to circumstances and measuring results quantitatively and qualitatively.

Two meetings ago we gave some presentations on Honors in Action, how to do research, and some hot topics like vaccines and psychiatric medications that relate to our question:

Do we really need medicine or prescription drugs to live a healthier life?

Here is Debbies powerpoint on how to do research.

As of right now our project is moving towards being a debate on vaccines and their relationship to long term health, the risks related to vaccines, as well as the non-vaccination movement and it's effect on the health of our society in general. But we may have to broaden our scope to include prescription pain medications, or psychiatric medications to allow for more rich debate.

Last week the president of the debate team came by, split us into pro and con groups, and had us discuss vaccines.

Tomorrow we will be asking you, especially those of you who got to discuss the topic in groups, what you think of our honors in action question and if we can form a good debate on the subject? If not what should we expand the debate on?

Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow :-)

Hello my fellow Alpha Kappans,

This past Wednesday December 10th, 2014 we asked YOU to help us develop a project/thesis question that relates both to our chosen theme Health and Medicine as Frontiers and to the overall Honors in Action Theme Frontiers and the Spirit of Exploration.

You did not disappoint.

There is a lot that we can explore within the theme of Health and Medicine as Frontiers and our members came up with some exceptional ideas. From increased life expectancy and it's influence on our future, to how advancements in Genetics and Biotechnology can affect the choices we make with our bodies, to our changing views on mental illness. But the question that seemed to get the most attention, votes, and even began a debate amongst our members, was in regards to pharmaceutical companies and their influence on our daily lives.

The exact question that won was:
Do we really need medicine or prescription drugs to live a healthier life?

Now this is our first draft question but it begins to spark ideas we can branch out on. For instance how pharmaceutical companies now advertise directly to the consumer and the influence that has on our drug dependence, how doctors approach treatment, and our overall health as a society. The modern epidemic of people becoming addicted to prescription narcotics. Or how our increase use of prescribed antibiotics are helping to form antibiotic resistant superbugs while at the same time the number of new antibiotics being discovered has dropped dramatically.

These are just some of the directions we can go in and next semester we will get the chance to fine tune our question as well as discuss what kind of project we can do to help us answer it.

Also we would greatly appreciate it if you filled out our quick survey.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XD3NH7W

We are always looking for ways to improve our chapter and better serve our members, so please if you can, take a moment and fill it out.
I swear it's brief. :-)

Wishing everyone luck on their finals and I look forward to seeing you all next semester.

Sincerely,

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

For those of you who were unable to attend last weeks meeting, the winner of our Honors in Action Theme is:

Theme 7: Health and Medicine as Frontiers

The next step is picking our question. The question is important because it is in essence our essay or thesis question that we will attempt to answer through our project and through the research we do next semester.

It is also important to remember that the question must address our study topic: Frontiers and the Spirit of Exploration.

The winning group will put together a number of different questions that they are interested in and then we as a chapter will vote on which question we are most interested in pursuing as a project next semester. Once I get the questions from the group, I will post them here on our blog for all of you to vote on, then during our final meeting of the semester (December 10th) we will announce the winning question.

Just as a reminder, there will be no meeting this coming Wednesday December 3rd, instead we invite you all to attend our Induction Ceremony being held in the Richard Harris Terrace from 2-4pm.
Come Support our New Inductees!!!
There will be a ceremony followed by a lunch. We will also be announcing the winner of our Executive Board elections. So please, if you haven't already RSVP to the E-Vite do so as soon as possible so we know how many lunches to prepare.

I hope to see you all and the Induction Ceremony!

How has everything been going for you all?
I hope you all enjoyed your holiday!

Well, let’s get right in to this, shall we? Now that everyone is (hopefully) used to your schedules, we here at PTK have a new thing to add to your busy schedules! Luckily, this is a very fun and rewarding extra activity. We have for you, volunteering at a credited High school to help the future generation of BMCC students! This high school is known as Manhattan Early College of Advertising (MECA).

The volunteering opportunity involves Mentoring and Tutoring youths for an hour a day (11-12pm) on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday. You can choose any number of days, whatever fits in to your schedule. The subjects we will be tutoring the students on include: Math, Biology, and Reading/Writing. During the first week we will be meeting at the Icarus statue in front of the school at 10:30-10:40 in order to walk over to the school as it can be a bit hard to find.
Hello, Hello, Hello everybody! How was the second week of classes? Did you have fun? I really hope you all did!

On Wednesday, September 10th, PTK will be hosting our first official meeting of the semester! The meeting will be held at 3pm in room N796 in the main building.
A special source has even informed me that there will be Brownies! Special PTK brownies made by one of our very own executive board members Elizabeth Ildefonso … Yummy~

With the first two days of class over and done with, I feel it is time to kick start the blog!

How were your summers?
How are your schedules?
Did you have fun?
Did you hangout with lots of friends?

There’s nothing much to report, nothing much to say so early in the semester.

So! What do I have to say? Well…
Here’s to the summer soon past. Here’s to the semester just started. Here’s to the friends we have and the ones we will come to know. Here’s to falling leaves and pumpkin spice. Most of all though, here’s to all of you for making it to another semester!

I am so excited for the PTK meetings to start up again so that I might see old friends and make new ones! I have missed you all so much over the summer, see you all again soon!
Vote, vote, voting!

That was the exciting happening of the final meeting of the semester, picking four new executive board members! We had professional looking ballets and everything!

There was something absolutely wonderful about listening to the heartfelt speeches of the people I have come to consider very good friends as they attempted to plead their case and prove just how qualified they are for the role. I wished I could have voted for all of them, every single candidate was wonderful and I loved them all so much. It was insanely difficult to vote for only three of them, as I am sure everyone agrees.
Despite this happening during the final meeting of the semester, it never once held a feeling of finality; all I could feel was the anticipation of jumping right back into it next semester

In the end, I am overwhelmingly proud of everyone who was involved and I want to give a big, big congratulations to our winners: Deborah N. Freire, Julius Diaz, Patricia Zeballos, and Elizabeth Ildefonso! To all those who didn't get elected, I wish you all the luck in the world because I hope to see you all run again next semester!

Stay tuned for more blog entries to be written after finals and good luck to everyone during finals week!
Yesterday at our general meeting we had our Executive Board Elections. Each of our candidates gave moving speeches on how they could benefit our chapter as Executives and it wasn't an easy decision by a long shot.
Well the votes have been tallied and our new Executive Board Team are:

Julius Diaz
Deborah N. Freire
Elizabeth Ildefonso
Patricia Zeballos

Congratulations to our victors and to all the candidates that ran. I am truly proud of all of our members and I expect to see each and everyone of you when we get back from summer break.

See you all next semester and I wish you all a whole hearted good luck on finals!
With emotions running high and my heart still racing, I am so happy to say that I feel the Honors in Action Project was an absolute success!

Today we, the members of PTK, got to see everything we have worked on for the last few weeks come together! From the Beginnings of Technology, with the wonderful Raven as our leader and myself to present, to the heated debate between our pseudo-politicians on Pro and the pseudo-activists on Con, all the way to the wonderfully fun futuristic presenters, everything had such a feeling of wonder and excitement! It was a wonderful moment in time and I am so happy to have been a part of it.

Though I was a bit biased, and gave a rather passionate argument for the con side of the debate, I adored how well Pro handled everything, it really felt like they were politicians.
I am so proud of everyone involved, including those who didn’t present. The audience was wonderful and polite, the researchers were thorough, everyone seems so passionate and confident, and I loved every single part. With passionate speeches from Raven, Julio, and Debbie, the meeting started and ended with a sense of togetherness that lasted long after I walked out of the conference room!

I can’t wait to see the video of our entire presentation and I especially can’t wait for all the things to come in my next two semesters with PTK!
